Foundry Networks (News - Alert) today announced that Helio selected Foundry’s 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) NetIron MLX-16 MPLS metro routers and the FastIron GS Power over Ethernet (PoE)-ready Layer 2/3 edge switches to power their rapidly growing mobile service over a nationwide high-speed 3G network.

The Calif.-based company, a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, said its Foundry’s NetIron MLX-16 routers and FastIron GS switches are designed to deliver and manage the unique mobile multimedia content that Helio (News - Alert) members create, consume and share. In turn, voice, data, text messages, online video, 3D and multiplayer games, instant messaging, Web browsing, uploading/downloading and exclusive content and services, Helio depends on Foundry’s switches and routers to scale and handle the diverse and bandwidth-demanding traffic on the network.

“We recently built out our network to keep up with growth and Foundry’s products and services met our needs,” said David Howard, senior director of Platform Engineering for Helio. “Their experienced sales and engineering teams ensured a smooth transition to Foundry’s networking products.”

Foundry’s NetIron MLX Series of metro routers offer a unique combination of advanced service delivery capabilities, high-versatility, superior port density, and increased traffic capacity. The state-of-the-art Clos fabric architecture in the NetIron MLX Series offers capacity of up to 3.84 Terabits per second (Tbps). It utilizes a unified, scalable architecture with common management and interface modules for advanced wire-speed service delivery, while controlling costs.

“The NetIron MLX router provides industry-leading port density and MPLS capabilities to allow Helio to provide media-rich content seamlessly and reliably to members,” said Ken Cheng, vice president and general manager of Foundry’s High-End and Service Provider Systems Business Unit.

“As an innovator in providing industry-leading services and networking hardware, Foundry offered Helio extremely feature-rich products that offered compelling performance, reliability and value when compared to competitive offerings.”

Foundry’s FastIron GS Series line of compact edge switches is a new generation of PoE switches designed for cost-effective and high-performance convergence at the network's edge and teature modular field upgradeability for 10/100/1000 Mbps PoE, 10GbE and redundant power in a 1.5U high form factor, the FastIron GS Series provides enterprise organizations with a flexible and reliable solution for enabling wireless LAN, Voice over IP (VoIP) and high-speed networking at the network edge, the company said.
